My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Maltese Falcon (1930) by Dashiell Hammett is a piece of genius, brilliantly woven and strung together to enchant and to entice the reader further into the story of Sam Spade and the hunt for his partner’s killer and for a priceless artefact, the falcon.
The reader clings to Spade as he dodges police interrogations and a slick crime boss named Gutman. Spade is described as “a blond satan” on the first page and by the end–the last chapter especially sings off the page–the reader will be believing that Spade is exactly what Hammet describes.
A strong recommend for those who enjoy mysteries and detective novels.
